SCN to provide $4 million through 2017 National Research Funding Competition

August 8th, 2017 (Ottawa) The Stem Cell Network (SCN) is pleased to launch a new funding competition to support high-quality translational research and clinical trials in stem cell and regenerative medicine research. The competition opened today and will run through to October 16, 2017. SCN anticipates awarding approximately $4 million through this peer-reviewed competition. The funding will support novel research that will ultimately realize both health and economic benefits for Canadians.

“Stem cell research is powering regenerative medicine and offering hope for millions of people. Canada is home to some of the world’s best and brightest stem cell scientists and it is because of their work that regenerative medicine is viewed as game changer; we are pleased to be able to support today’s scientific leaders and those who are coming up through the ranks,” said Dr. Michael Rudnicki, CEO & Scientific Director.

SCN’s 2017 funding competition has been made possible thanks to the continued support of the Government of Canada and Budget 2017, Building A Strong Middle Class. This budget provided an additional $6 million for SCN in recognition of the significant potential of stem cell research and the emergence of regenerative medicine as an innovative life sciences sector.

“This year’s funding competition will provide support through three research programs. We are happy to once again provide support for phase I/II clinical trials, and offer a new program stream designed to move forward research that is nearing the clinical trials stage,” said Cate Murray, Executive Director of SCN. She added, “As always, SCN will support novel projects that are multidisciplinary in nature and are globally relevant.”

Call for Proposals for all funding programs will be open until October 16, 2017. All proposals will be peer reviewed and results of the competitions will be announced in early 2018, upon approval by SCN’s Board of Directors.

Please note, funding is dependent on the completion of SCN’s federal contribution agreement with the Government of Canada.

About the Stem Cell Network: Supporting and building Canada’s stem cell and regenerative medicine research sector has been the raison d’être of the Stem Cell Network (SCN) since its inception in 2001.  Its work has been supported by the Government of Canada from the beginning. SCN’s mandate is to act as a catalyst for enabling the translation of stem cell research into clinical applications, commercial products and public policy. In just over 15 years SCN has forged a national community that has transformed stem cell research in Canada, brought research to the point where regenerative medicine is changing clinical practice and established an outstanding international reputation. SCN has pushed the boundaries of what was a basic research area towards translational outcomes for the clinic and marketplace. www.stemcellnetwork.ca
