SCN is excited to offer a new design workshop Crafting Visual Explanations of Complex Ideas with workshop facilitator Martin Krzywinski. This workshop will distill the core concepts of information design into practical guidelines for creating visual explanations of scientific concepts. Attendees will learn visual strategies for organization, representing relationships and concepts in graphical form, and establishing emphasis, narratives and themes. These strategies will be applied to graphical abstracts and posters.
Redesigns of posters and graphical abstracts submitted by workshop attendees will illustrate these guidelines concretely. Attendees are invited to submit their work (a graphical abstract or a poster) as part of the application form. SCN management and the workshop facilitator will choose as many submissions as possible to re-design as teaching examples for the workshop. Submission of graphical abstracts or posters for re-design is not mandatory but is highly encouraged.

Who Should Attend?
This workshop is open to research trainees (e.g. a graduate student, post-doc, research associate and/or technician) currently working in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine in a Canadian lab.
Workshop Learning Objectives:
- Apply core principles of information design to create clear and effective visual explanations of scientific concepts.
- Utilize visual strategies to organize content, represent relationships, and establish emphasis, narrative flow, and thematic elements in graphical abstracts and posters.
- Evaluate and improve visual designs through guided feedback and redesigns of submitted graphical abstracts or posters.

Registration is limited for this event. Registration will close on June 2, 2025 or as soon as capacity is reached. Register as soon as possible.
Eligibility
- Registrants must be a trainee/highly qualified personnel (HQP) (i.e. a graduate student, post-doc, research associate and/or technician) currently working on a research project in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine in a Canadian lab.
- If you’re unsure whether you are eligible, please email trainingSCN@stemcellnetwork.ca for confirmation.
- SCN reserves the right to approve/deny selected registrants based on factors such as distribution of spots between research groups.
Conditions
- Note that participants in this course are required to use their own laptop computers, with head-set for audio and webcam for video interaction. A second monitor/screen is also highly recommended.
- Spaces are limited for this training opportunity. SCN will cover the registration costs (paid directly to the organizers) of this workshop for registrants who attend the full workshop session.
- For applicants who fail to attend all sessions or complete the course content, a fee of $200 will be charged to their supervisor to cover the costs associated with delivering this training opportunity.
- By accepting a place on this workshop, the recipient agrees to provide a report describing the value of the training and networking opportunities made available through the award. This information will be used at SCN’s discretion on its website, newsletters and for the purpose of reporting to their funding agencies.
- By registering for this workshop, attendees also accept to have their pictures taken during workshop and used in materials as described above. Please note that expense reimbursement will be processed only once the completed report is received.
